For more than 50 years, the Italian Section, Department of Western Languages, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University has continued its mission to promote Italian language and culture to the public through different forms of activities and events. The Storytelling Workshop: “A Bridge to Italian Heritage”, conducted by Giovanna Conforto, is also regarded as one of successful outcomes and a proof of continuous cooperation between the Italian Section and the Embassy of Italy in Bangkok.
The main objective of this special event is not only to enhance academic atmosphere and broaden academic horizons in the Faculty of Arts, but also to firmly strengthen the academic and cultural linkage between Thailand and Italy. Thanks to the Embassy of Italy for introducing to Dottoressa Giovanna Conforto, an internationally recognized Italian storyteller and visiting lecturer at the European Institute of Design (IED) in Rome and at the International School of Storytelling in East Sussex (UK), her repertoire highlights the Italian language and lifestyle through bilingual events on classic themes of Italian culture. So, it is another great opportunity for Italian Section to work with the expert on the traditional art of storytelling from Italy and the Embassy of Italy in organizing the first academic activity under the framework of the Italian Festival in Thailand 2016. Furthermore, this is the first time that Chula Global Network (CGN) joins this proficuous relationship, therefore marking a new chapter of academic cooperation between Chulalongkorn University and the Italian Embassy.
The storytelling, an ancient and valuable art form of human expression, involves the presentation of a story or a narrative that can be combined with other art movements, for example drama, music, dance, comedy, puppetry etc. It always brings together words and the world to life, stimulating the imagination and building a sense of community between storytellers and audiences.
The distinguished storyteller, Giovanna Conforto, provided many interesting games and activities on storytelling. The highlight of the workshop was the session devoted to brainstorming and practicing of the participants about how the storytelling approach could be adapted to many fields of study and career; from psychology to mass media, from marketing to political sciences. During the intermission, all of the participants enjoyed a snack and socialized with one another. The refreshment time was a good opportunity for everyone to get to know and share their own experience. In the final session of the workshop, Asst. Prof. Dr. Neungreudee Lohapon, Head of Italian Section, gave closing remarks and presented a little token to Giovanna Conforto.
