The Fifth Biennial Conference of the Asian Society of International Law

“International Legal Challenges to the Asian Changing Economic and Political Landscape”

           The theme of the conference is “International Law and the Changing Economic and Political Landscape in Asia”. There were scholars and practitioners from Asian countries and other parts of the world to present their thought on various recent developments in the Asian region. The Conference’s sub-themes include:
          - Legal Aspects on Regional Economic Integration and Cooperation
          - Legal Aspects on Regional Integration and Cooperation in Political and Social Dimensions
          - Legal Aspects on Regional Integration and Cooperation in Environment and Energy
          - Changing Approaches to International Law
              The two-day Conference was opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand and followed by keynote speech of distinguish speakers including the judges of the International Court of Justice (Judges Hisashi Owada and Xue Hanqin). The following events were the paper presentation covering a wide range of issues relating to both public and private international law including law of the sea, trade and international business law, international investment law, international environment law, international criminal law, international adjudication and human rights. There was also discussion on regional integration especially ASEAN and on regional perspectives to international law. Over hundred papers were presented in over forty parallel panels. In addition, there are two special panels focusing on internet and cyber security sponsored by the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA) and on international humanitarian law sponsored by the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC).
             The Conference was well attended by participants not only from Asia but from other parts of the world. The presidents of other regional international law societies also attended the Conference to strengthen the cooperation among the societies.
