Shigeyuki Abe, Doshisha University, Japan, at Saranites Room, 2nd
Fl., CU Auditorium, Chulalongkorn University on Wednesday, 30 March 2011
The purpose of this lecture is to bring understanding the current situation of Japan as the 1985 Plaza Accord raised the value of Yen to double, from 240 to 120 per US$. Although Japanese export manufacturers could keep international competitiveness through the oil crises period in the 1970s, they started to face difficulties in producing domestically. Massive FDI flew out to East Asia and the region has transformed into the world factory of electric machinery. In the end the comparative advantage structure of East Asian countries became so similar and complementarity is only found in East Asia’s trade with the USA. Professor Shigeyuki Abe will provide statistical evidences of the above statement and try to reason how East Asia should go from here in view of the G-20 meeting resolutions.

The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) to be established by 2015, is the major goal for the economic integration as a single market Production base and characterized by equitable economic development. In July 2009, Thailand proposed the idea of enhancing ASEAN connectivity as a strategic goal of ASEA Nwhich should be a vital component in the building of a more competitive ASEAN Community. The ASEAN Leaders endorsed this initiative and thus mandated the creation of a High Level Task Force (HLTF) on ASEAN Connectivity to devise a Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity by the 17th ASEAN Summit this year.
